Bracco Innovation Day: the Nobel Prize laureate for Chemistry, Stoddart, and Professor Jensen of MIT in Boston at Bracco Research Center

Colleretto Giacosa, Italy , 06/07/2019

For us, research and development is a strategic priority and a key contributor to the Group’s growth,” affirmed Diana Bracco during this year’s Bracco Innovation Day.In 2018, we invested 106.2 million euros in this area - a sum equal to 9.1% of the reference year turnover. Here at Colleretto and in our other research centers, important projects are underway in the field of diagnostics – in Magnetic Resonance and ultrasound, in new treatment opportunities that are arising using microbubbles in combination with ultrasound and studies on assisted surgery, where our fluorescent probes are able to provide a significant contribution to therapy, especially in oncology. But that is not all. Our research,” added the President and CEO of the Group, “is also deeply committed to the research of processes in order to yield ever more sustainable production. It is no coincidence that we decided to dedicate this year’s Bracco Innovation Day to this theme.

The Group’s commitment to respect of the environment and to employee health is long-standing, as is the development of cutting-edge manufacturing processes. “Our factories worldwide utilize raw materials obtained, wherever possible, from renewable sources and reduce manufacturing and all other kinds of waste, all in the name of the circular economy,” stated Fulvio Renoldi Bracco, CEO of Bracco Imaging, during his speech. “Sustainability and innovation are structural components of our identity, also because our success is, in fact, based on sustainable innovation, which means green chemistry and smart solutions.

There were also lengthy discussions on the new and efficient paths of chemical synthesis in the contrast agent sector, particularly focused on reducing the use of organic solvents and metal catalysts, on the elimination of toxic reagents and the recovery of valuable, reusable raw materials. The speech from Professor Jensen of MIT was essential for interpreting and interacting with the world of evolving and automated manufacturing processes, a new instrument for pursuing sustainability while maintaining the high quality of one’s own product. Ettore Zuccato from the Mario Negri Institute then discussed the increasingly relevant issue of environmental pollution caused by pharmaceuticals, the related effects involving the flora and fauna, of regulatory approaches to address the problem and the possible solutions.

Finally, the meeting was a unique occasion to discover the essence of complex molecular architectures and the sophisticated mechanisms that make them vital, directly from the words of one of the creators of these amazing mechanisms, the Nobel Prize recipient for Chemistry in 2016, James Fraser Stoddart, who gave a much appreciated keynote address.
